Remembering John James 22 June 1937 – 13 June 2023

It is with great sadness that we heard that Mr John C. U. James OBE passed away on Tuesday 13 June, aged 85, following a recent stroke.

John was made an Honorary member of the IC of GB in 1992. His contributions to tennis over many years was significant. John was made an Honorary Member of the All England Club in 2006.

John was born in Llanelli in 1937, being involved in junior tennis and as an umpire, officiated at The Championships. In 1972 he was elected to represent Wales on the LTA and became Assistant Secretary, which included the organisation of Davis Cup and Wightman Cup matches. In 1983 he took over as the LTA Secretary holding the post until 2002, serving on numerous Committees during that period and for many years after.

After his retirement from the LTA, John served as President of Tennis Europe for six years, was President of Middlesex Tennis, vice-chairman of the British Olympic Association and chairman of the British Olympic Foundation. He was involved in the organisation of the tennis event at the London 2012 Olympic Games and ran a leg of the torch relay.

In 2003, John was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

John was very well known in numerous tennis circles, respected and fondly remembered by many of us – passionate about tennis. He will be missed. As secretary of LTA he will be remembered as being supportive of the players at all levels

Our thoughts are with John’s wife Pat and all his family.
