Potter Cup Review 2012

Potter Cup Review 2012

2012 is the 40th anniversary on which this very successful competition has been held.

The Potter Cup has rightly earned the reputation as one of the most prestigious competitions among the over 45 players throughout the world and our special thanks are extended to the IC of Spain for hosting once more the Potter Cup event in Barcelona.

Nine nations contested this year’s trophy plus a second team from Spain.  Italy, France, Spain and the USA all arrived with world class teams and for the second consecutive year we had the misfortune to draw one of the hot favourites in the first round, our old enemies, the French.

James Turner, Ben Knapp and Mathew Coombes Made there debuts in the blistering heat at the Real Club de Polo, all three played superbly on the red clay but together with Chris Clarke, Chris Hearn and Graham Neale (cap) we fell too the French after a fiercely fought afternoon of tennis.

The following day we recorded a 4-1 win over Luxembourg and on Sunday a 5-0 victory over Belgium leaving us in 5th position for the tournament.

We are extremely grateful to Berta and Juan Maria Tintore and the entire organising committee for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the continuation of the Potter Cup. To the Real Club de Polo and the Real Club de Tennis who entertained us so magnificently on the Friday night, to the Catalan Tennis Federation and the many sponsors who continue to support this most important event.

The final positions were

1. Spain
2. USA
3. France
4. Italy
5. Great Britain
6. Germany
7. Spain ‘B’
8. Ireland
9. Belgium
