ICs of South Africa & Canada

28th June, 30th June and 2nd July 2017

Results: 1st IC of GB (27.5 wins from 36 matches, 76% win ratio); 2nd IC of South Africa (19.5 wins from 38 matches, 51% win ratio); and 3rd IC of Canada (10 wins from 40 matches, 25% win ratio)
Venues: The Edgbaston Priory Club (28th June), St George’s Hill LTC (30th June) and The Hurlingham Club (2nd July)

It was a pleasure to welcome two large IC teams from Canada and South Africa for the pre-Wimbledon series of matches at Edgbaston Priory, St George’s Hill and The Hurlingham Club. Given that some teams played a different number of matches, the overall result was based on % matches won. After the three matches GB finished first with 76%, South Africa were second with 51% and Canada third with 25%.

At Edgbaston Priory the teams managed to practice on grass the day before the match but had to retreat to the superb facilities of the Indoor Tennis Centre on match day, where 7 rounds of doubles matches were played on three courts. The enthusiasm to compete and connect was palpable and the tennis was played in a wonderful spirit and to a great standard.

The scenic St George’s Hill LTC hosted the second leg of the pre-Wimbledon tour for our guests. Preceding the tennis on Thursday evening, John Beddington very kindly organised a drinks reception at the High Commission of Canada in Central London for all participants. On the Friday, the weather held and 50 players were able to play on the beautiful front grass courts for the whole day.

The evening dinner was well attended by 65 people and guests included the Chairman of St George’s Hill, Peter Jamieson. Gifts were exchanged with the match captains, Leonie Grondel (SA) and Jim Cameron (Canada).

The final leg of the tour for our pre-Wimbledon guests was completed on Sunday 2nd July at The Hurlingham Club. It was a fantastic day and the spirit of the IC evident on and off the court. The sun shone and the grass courts were in excellent condition. The Garden Party was a huge success, and the exhibition doubles match was well supported. The day ended with Pimms by the courts, with our visitors very excited about their trip to The Championships the following day.

There was laughter, friendship, lovely food, great tennis and a few formalities at the match dinners which were wonderfully hosted by Edgbaston Priory, St George’s Hill and The Hurlingham Club.
