Results of The 14th Wallenberg Trophy

The 14th Wallenberg Trophy was to be played in Royan on the west coast of France, usually a sunny spot where the French like to go on holiday.  Unfortunately our team of Anthea Stewart, Lena Keothavong, Matt Coombes and Jim May were in for the wettest weekend France had seen in decades!  Fortunately the delightful Garden Club of Royan (where you would usually play on beautiful red clay courts overlooking the Atlantic) had three (also red clay..) indoor courts which the club very generously let us play on for the three day match.  We had a fantastic time, largely due to the superb hospitality extended to us by the French IC and the club itself, with faultless organisation, and outstanding food and red wine laid on throughout the weekend.  A huge thank you to them.

In the past the match has been between the ICs of Sweden, Belgium, France and GB, but Belgium pulled out of the event in 2011 as they felt they could not field strong enough teams.  They were due to be replaced by Germany but the lack of preparation time and clashes with German League matches meant they could not get a team together.  The French IC therefore managed to enter two teams to make sure the match went ahead.

The IC of GB faired well with wins against Sweden and France B.  We then played France A on Sunday to decide the trophy, who turned out to be too strong overall beating us 5-1 (but with a notable win for Anthea!) and some closely fought matches.

Thank you very much to Anthea, Lena and Matt for representing the IC of GB so well both on and off the court, it was an absolute pleasure to be on their team.
