DAY 4 - IC U16 JUNIOR CHALLENGE WORLDWIDE FINALS

Welcome to the Day 4 round-up from the IC U16 Junior Challenge Worldwide Finals at The All England Lawn Tennis Club. Following a 4-2 victory over Great Britain the USA have been crowned 2014 champions. Congratulations team USA!  However, with 4 of the other 5 countries joint second on the leader board (each with 2 wins and 2 losses) there is a lot to play for on the final day.  In the other results, Argentina beat Italy 4 - 3 and Japan beat a young South African team 5 – 1.

DAY 4 RESULTS

USA 4 - 2 Great Britain

The USA completed a 4-2 win over Great Britain to be crowned champions of the 2014 IC U16 Junior Challenge Worldwide Finals. The British boys secured wins in their respective singles matches and following wins for the USA girls, the match was tied 2-2 going into the doubles. The tipping point was a first set tie-break win for the USA boys and they never looked back. Coupled with a straight sets win for the USA girls duo of Arconada and Kingsley the IC of USA secured the rubber and the overall title with a 4-2 win.

Argentina 4 - 3 Italy

The Italians got off to a great start with wins in the first round of both the boys and girls singles. However, the Argentinians soon levelled the match 2-2 following wins at the number one positions in the next round. The doubles matches were split and the tie came down to the mixed doubles play-off which Argentina won 10-8.

Japan 5 - 1 South Africa

The IC of Japan completed a 5 – 1 victory over South Africa to move onto two wins overall and sit in joint second place on the leader board with three other teams. Despite a tough week for the South Africans, the team has gained considerable experience at the 2014 finals and the future looks promising as the majority of their young team will still be eligible for next year’s regional qualifying event (as well as potentially the 2016 worldwide finals).
