Cambridge university beat the IC of GB 5-4.

IC of GB names first:

Rob Blythe beat Tim Prosser 7-5,6-3
Chris Archer beat James Shacklock 6-4,6-4
Tim Weir lost to Sam Ashcroft 7-5, 5-7 (7-10)
Cameron Johnston lost to Sven Sylvester 7-5,6-2
Adrian Blackman lost to Gerald Wu 6-1,5-7 (6-10)
Andrew Creighton beat Rob Legg 6-3,6-3

So at lunch it was all square after the singles with the IC narrowly losing two deciding tie-breaks which was to prove decisive, as the whole fixture was literally decided on a couple of points in each case!

However, the IC team felt confident at lunch having nullified the youth of the University side in the singles with 3 doubles to play where we felt the extra experience (aka age particularly in the case of the IC's 3rd pair) would be too much for Cambridge.

With the second and third pairs having split the spoils both in 3 sets the scene was set at 4-4 with Blythe and Archer, the IC's first pair surely nailed on for victory and an overall win for the IC standing only 2 points from victory at the end of their second set ? However, as we know the tennis scoring system can soon turn against you, and suddenly after losing that set 8-6 in the breaker they lost the third 6-3, and defeat had been grabbed as they say!

The doubles results were as follows:

Blythe/Archer lost to Sylvester/Ashcroft 6-3,6-7 (8-6) 3-6
Weir/Johnston lost to Prosser/Markedes 6-3,4-6,4-6
Creighton/Blackman beat Shacklock/Phillips 6-4,1-6, 6-4

It was a cracking match with close matches particularly with all 3 doubles going to 3 sets, but the IC came away ruing their chances and ultimately having to accept that a few critical points got away from them at crucial times. Great hospitality , great company and great tennis on grass at Fenners. Everyone came away realising what a great sport this is!
