IC of GB Sportsmanship Award 2020 - Gordon Reid

Congratulations to Gordon Reid for winning the IC of GB Sportsmanship Award 2020. Please see below the presentation speech given by Anne Clark (Chair of the IC of GB) last week at the AELTC.

''Firstly, many thanks to the AELTC for kindly allowing us to present this special Award at the Club.

The IC of GB Sportsmanship Award is given to a British tennis player who has over the course of his/her career or in a single situation has shown an admirable attitude as a sportsman or sportswoman.

The list of previous winners is impressive and I have great pleasure in helping present the 2020 award to Gordon Reid.

The IC helps promote and renew friendships across the net and the world and encourages fair play and sportsmanship, something that Gordon has consistently done.

Gordon relished the opportunity to remain in the sport discovering wheelchair tennis after developing a rare neurological condition, transverse myelitis, in 2004. Since then his achievements have been remarkable – I won’t list them all as I said this would be a short speech but to pick out a few, Gordon achieved the number 1 spot in singles in 2016, doubles in 2015; winner and finalist in many grand slams (singles and doubles) and a gold medal winner Paralympics 2016 (singles) and silver medal in the doubles.

Gordon has been rightly recognised many times for his fair play and sportsmanship throughout his tennis career and I know is an inspiration to many with his tenacity, courage and enthusiasm.

A very worthy winner of this special award.''
