Potter Cup Report 2021 (Ladies)

Venue: Barcelona, Spain

Result: IC of GB finish 4th

Match Report:

It was lovely to be back at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona to compete in the 4th ladies Potter Cup event. It was a fantastic achievement to hold this event given all of the complications of the current environment and everyone appreciated the effort involved by the IC of Spain.

This was the first time that Germany had competed in the Ladies event and as current world champions of the 40’s event it was agreed that they should be seeded 1 followed by Spain 2, Italy 3 and then Great Britain 4.

On day one we played Ireland with Jo winning 7-5, 6-2 and Lucie winning with a very efficient 6-1, 6-1 win giving a 2-0 victory.

On day two we played number 1 seeds Germany where we put up a valiant effort with Lucie taking their number 1 player to 3 sets but we eventually lost both singles. We then were able to return to the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona to support the men’s team compete in their very exciting doubles matches against Ireland.

On day three we played Italy – also a strong side who were runners up at this year’s world championships 40’s event and again put up a good fight in the singles matches but Italy were able to win through in both resulting in 4th place out of 8 for GB.

Thanks to Leyla Ogan for organising the ladies team and was unfortunately not able to travel to Barcelona to play. It was a fantastic experience as always with excellent hospitality at both the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona and the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, a real privilege to play on such superb clay courts. It is also a great achievement to hold a ladies event that attracts such a high standard of tennis. A great weekend – thanks to everyone involved for their support.
