The Wallenburg Trophy, September 24-26th 2010, SALK Stockholm

Our strong IC of GB team comprised Leyla Ogan, Katie Shaw, Jim May and Graham Neale with Bill Gowans as non playing captain.
We eventually finished second after beating Belgium and France on Friday and Saturday and losing to a very strong Swedish team on Sunday.
Katie Shaw played outstandingly, winning all of her matches in straight sets against good opposition. Leyla Ogan also had a great weekend, beating her Belgian opponent easily on the first day and then coming through an incredibly tight match against Virginie Buisson of France on Saturday. The on court non playing captain was left emotionally drained after this match, so I don’t know how Leyla must have felt, but her commitment was absolute! It probably did affect her a little in that she admitted to feeling exhausted before losing to Asa Svenson on Sunday who had apparently been as high as 26 in the world not very long ago. Jim played and outstanding match to beat Olivia Cayla of France 1 and 0. The Swede, Tillstrom, who reached the last 8 at Wimbledon a few years ago, proved too strong for him on Sunday, although Jim broke in the second and had chances to serve for the set. Graham was disappointed and very unlucky not to win a singles. He lost a close match to the Belgian, Carlier on the first day (he had played no 2 for Belgium in the Potter Cup this year), lost more easily to a classy Arnaud Deleval (who hasn’t lost to a British player for some time!) and had a very close third set tie break loss to the Swede.
Predictably we were very strong in the mixed, losing only one match against Tillstrom and partner in the ‘final’ against Sweden.
The facilities at the SALK tennis centre are fabulous with 14 indoor courts on two floors and Ingvar and his fellow organizers made us very welcome.
The match dinner was a wonderful occasion, held at the Grand Hotel in the centre of Stockholm. The tone was only lowered by the IC of GB captain’s speech. W.G.
