Dunlop Trophy 27 & 28 April 2013

The Dunlop Trophy match between the IC of Germany and the IC of GB took place over the last weekend of April at the well-known Rochus Club in Dusseldorf.

The IC of GB Team managed by Benson Greatrex and including Lizzie Coulson, Karen Hunter, Mark Beim, Bill Gowans and Mike Dawe went with some expectation of regaining the Trophy which the IC of Germany won 7-4 at Edgbaston Priory in October 2010.

However on a cold Saturday morning on the clay we went 3-2 down after the singles. Mark Beim and Mike Dawe both won excellent matches against Rainer Marzenell and Helmut Rudzinski respectively. Lizzie, Karen and Bill all put up a good fight but eventually went down!  (Benson Greatrex and Wolfgang Popp, the IC of Germany Team Manager were both unable to play due to hamstring strains!)

Three doubles and two mixed were scheduled to follow. With Alex Kurucz (Honorary IC of GB Member) substituting and the slightly injured Wolfgang able to play doubles we were confident that at least two doubles and a mixed would go our way.

However it was not to be and the match results show that though the doubles were close all three went to the IC of Germany. One mixed was played – an epic match – in which Lizzie and Mark came back from a set and 1-5 to win the second set and take the rubber 10-7 in the deciding tiebreak.

Sadly a 7-3 victory for the IC of Germany.

The hospitality and organisation both by the IC of Germany and the Rochus Club was exceptional. Our thanks go to Wolfgang Popp and Alex Kurucz and to the club. We look forward to the next opportunity to play for the Dunlop Trophy in GB in about two years time.
