2011 Potter Cup report

2011 Potter Cup report

A five man team travelled to Barcelona this year to represent GB in the 2011 Potter Cup. Graham Neale, Simon Curtis and Chris Hearn all returned to compete again whilst excellent debut's were made by Steve Brett and Chris Clarke. Unfortunately the "Big Guns" of Bates and Fulwood were unavailable this year which led to the fourth seeded position being awarded to the USA, the consequence was a first round match against an outrageously strong Spanish team including Arrese, Costa, Di Miquel, Osta, Luna and Puig Miquel who went on to produce a comfortable win of this year's competition. The GB team competed hard right to the end and were rewarded with an exciting 4-3 win over Belgium followed by a 4-1 win over Spain 'B' on the final day finishing in a credible 5th position.

A great debt of thanks must be given to the 'Copa Potter' organising committee who have again excelled with the organisation and hospitality, also the Federacio Catalana De Tennis who in difficult economic times have continued to raise sponsorship to ensure the continuation of this most traditional event and the Polo Club who welcome the teams every year and provide such well prepared facilities.

An unusual change occurred in the schedule this year caused by the European Cup final clashing with the official dinner on the Saturday night. The decision was taken to move the dinner to Thursday night thus making it a "Welcome Official Dinner". This change was well received by all the nations because it gives a free night on Saturday allowing each team to prepare in there own way for the final day's play. GB endorse this new format and would like to see it maintained for next year.

The traditional dinner hosted by the Real Club de Barcelona on Friday night remained unchanged and we were entertained superbly with exceptional food and surroundings for which we are most grateful .

Thank you to all our friends from all the participating nations who embrace the true spirit of IC tennis that makes this event so enjoyable and especially a big thank you for the commitment of the GB team, three members of which played with injury's to keep us viable!
